What is animal assisted therapy all about?

Because everyone is different, therapy is different for everyone! In general, you may expect to share what is going on in your life, explore your history and personal stories, and share feedback from previous sessions and the skills you've been practicing. Depending upon your needs, therapy might be short-term and cover a single concern or longer-term to address challenging patterns and ongoing growth and development.

Animal Assisted Therapy provides a complement to traditional counseling by including a friendly and calm animal in the room. Often, the presence of a trained therapy dog provides an environment that is conducive to the vulnerability and support necessary to the counseling process. Additionally, specific interventions using the animal may be integrated into counseling. These will vary from person to person depending upon treatment goals. Overall, the research supports several benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy:

  • Emotional support and stress relief

  • Learning cognitive self-care skills and improving self-image

  • Cultivating social skills

  • Providing opportunities for activity and training
